ReportTechnical Visit to Sea Piling works of Tseung
Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel Tsueng Kwan O Interchange and Associated Works
By Mr. John CHAN
On 15 June 2019 sunny morning, a group of civil engineering students
from Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) (Tuen Mun) visited the
site of sea piling works for the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel Tsueng Kwan O
Interchange and Associated Works. Materials Division of HKIE had arranged this
technical visit for them, and this visit was conducted by Mr. CHENG Tak Sum,
Senior Construction Manager, and Ir MAN Ngo Yin Leo, Assistant Project Manager
of Shanghai Tunnel (HK) Co., Ltd., one of the main contactors of this
construction contract.
The technical visit was divided into two parts, the first part was
project introduction and briefing of construction technologies and plants for
sea piling works by Mr. T. S.CHENG. He shared his over 40 years experiences in
civil engineering construction to the students, enriching their horizon from
construction site safety to construction details, he went through every steps
of the procedure of construction of sea piling works, including setting-out of
location of piles, construction of temporary steel platforms for driving of
steel casing and concreting technique for sea piles. Mr. CHENG’s fruitful
sharing gave great benefits to the students.
The second part was site inspection from the observatory platform,
Ir Leo MAN guided the students to
understand the details of sea piling works including the site arrangement of marine
works, use of barges & tug boat and construction sequences of piling works
at sea etc. This visit was an opportunity to let the students deeply understand
the details and challenges in marine engineering works and widen their horizon
in civil engineering construction.
Finally, we would give a sincere thanks to Ir LAM Chi Sing of the Materials
Division, HKIE for his co-ordination and arrangement of this fruitful technical
visit for IVE students.
