Greater Bay Area Technical Visit –Dextra Guangzhou Factory-Manufacturing of GFRP

Organizer: HKIE Materials Division,

Co-organizer: The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Hong Kong Branch

Date, Time & Venue:

6 July 2019 (Saturday) 8:30 -5:00 pm and return to Futian checkpoint,

Assembly:   8:30 am at Lok Ma Chau MTR Station (Hong Kong side) –In front of Watsons (Floor L1).

Programme Highlights

In reinforced concrete structures and geotechnical applications, FRP materials have become a substitute for steel. It can be either made Glass-fibre based (GFRP0 or Carbon –fibre based (CFRP). It has advantages over steel in offering very high –tensile performances with light weight compared to steel, fully resistant to corrosion and cut-able by standard earth removal equipment and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Since 1996, Dextra has established new standards, becoming the worldwide reference in FRP manufacturing, In this visit, participants will have the opportunity to see the “Pultrusion” manufacturing process of 25mm GFRP permanent rock-bolted (fully threaded) for Caverns and 13mm GFRP permanent rebars (straight and bends) for concrete reinforcement.

Report

Greater Bay Area Technical Visit –Dextra Guangzhou Factory-Manufacturing of GFRP

By Ir LAM Chi Sing

A technical visit was organized on 6 July 2019 by the Materials Division of the HKIE and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining IOM3 (Hong Kong Branch). Upon arrival, the representative of Dextra Group Company welcame receiving our Members and gave us a presentation in the lecture room. The representative Mr.Pierre HOFMANN introduced Glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) material which is commonly used as a temporary reinforcement in the construction fields, especially for tunnelconstruction. Dextra has developed an innovative product to revolution approach to use composite (fibre glass polymer) materials in tunnels and caverns work, with a permanent solution suitable for projects of 50, 100 or even 120 years lifetime.

Fibre is a material which can be glass, aramid and carbon. Polymer is a thermoset of polyester, vinylester and epoxy, which combines can form fibre reinforcement. It is a light weight material with easy handling. According to the ENISO14040, it can achieve 100% life cycle assessment. In the American Concrete Institute, AC440.IR015, Guide for the Design and Construction of Structural Concrete Reinforced with fibre-reinforcement polymer (FRP) Bars was also used as one of the design criteria. Its tensile stress is doubled compared to steel rebar grade 500, for only 25% of its weight. Cut –ability test can be applied to Glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) which has high rock bolt shear capacity. Dextra introduced GFRP soft-eye. The soft-eye technology has been developed in 1996 ad successful implemented for the Bangkok MTR subway station. The single shear guillotine test of bolt/grout system shall comply with BS7861-1:2017, strata reinforcement support system components used in coal mines-Part 1: specification for rock-bolt, and can develop 350 MPa Several case studies for the application of rock bolts were also discussed. To test its durability, GFRP bar were subjected to high ph value (12.6 ph13.0) with 60 degrees Celsius with duration greater than 6 months.

After the talk, the participants were led to visit their laboratory and factory to understand the workflow of glass fibre reinforced polymer reinforcement bar. The technical visit ended with the question-and-answer session.
