The Technical Visit to Shiu Wing Steel Manufacturing Factory

By Miss LI Hoi Lam (Bonnie) and Ir LAM Chi Sing

A technical visit to the Shiu Wing Steel Manufacturing Factory was held on 26 June 2021. This was co-organized with the Materials Division, Environmental Division and Associate Members Committee. It was a precious and eye-opening experience being able to visit a steel mill and learn this first-hand information in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic.

From this visit, we have experienced the entire process of manufacturing of steel in Hong Kong, which helps us to understand steel production in reality. This also raises our awareness that the Vickers hardness test data taken from different steels can have a great variety of hardness values due to their different composition and process of treatment, while hardness test results of the same steel will give more uniform value.

After the visit to the manufacturing site, we learnt the process of steel production from heating of raw billet materials over 1050° C in the furnace to the final process of hot rolling to produce steel bars of various sizes. We also visited the control room, laboratory and the cut & bend workshop, The background history of Shiu Wing steel was introduced during the final sharing section. This visit enlightens us to think of optimization or recycling of resources in the manufacturing industry in which different factories can collaborate to create synergy to protect the environment and to achieve cost-savings and industrial efficiency. For example, the coal residues in steel mill can be used as fuel to generate power, and this could eventually reduce the amount of wastage in the landfill. Other examples include use of seawater for cooling in electrical power plant, solar panels installed on building roofs to generate electricity and use of wind turbines as an alternative source for power supply.

This visit enables participants to gain knowledge on steel production, testing and the achievement of the required properties through various process of treatment. We are now more interested in engineering materials including their applications and testing. At the end of the visit, we thanked Shiu Wing Steel for arranging this valuable visit.
