Materials Discipline
Organizer:Materials Division

Time & Venue
13 May
2022 (Friday). Time: 6:30pm -8:00 pm, at Chan Yat Mei Sophie Room, 9/F of the HKIE Headquarters.
Speaker: Ir Professor Joseph Mak,
Chairman, HKIE Materials Division
Joseph was the former Chief Structural
Engineer of Hong Kong Housing Department before retirement. As
a professional engineer, Joseph is a FIStructE, FHKIE (Structural) and FHKIE
(Materials). He is specialized and responsible for the standard structural designs and prefabrication, which have been
widely adopted in Housing Authority projects since early 90’s. As Chief Structural
Engineer, he oversaw the
structural section of the Independent Checking Unit (ICU), which
is the unit assuming the role of Buildings Department (BD) for vetting all structural submissions of Housing
Department projects. In parallel, Joseph looked
after the Housing
Laboratory assuming a policing role, managing all the directly appointed commercial testing laboratories, compiling structural
specification and standards. He was in charge of managing all the factory manufacture of precast elements, architectural materials and building components in Mainland China. He has launched product certification for
construction materials in Housing Authority projects, which emphasized on
upstream factory control and audits.
In HKIE, Joseph is currently
the Chairman of Materials Division. He has been the Past Council Member and Past

Programme
Highlights
To satisfy the academic criteria, engineers in
the Materials Discipline are in the past trained in the university under a
materials degree. On the other hand, in Hong Kong, construction materials have
been widely used in the engineering industry. Materials engineers should be one
of the right types of professional engineers to steer and manage the materials
issues in both civil and building construction works.
The nature of works
of Materials Engineers in the construction industry can be broadly categorized
under the following areas:
(a)
Construction Management
(b)
Material Factory Management
(c)
Laboratory Management
(d)
Certification and Audits
(e)
Research and Development
To give recognition
to these sectors of materials engineers in the construction industry, we are ready to facilitate
them to gain the materials
engineer membership by opening the academic requirements to those of the civil, structural,
environmental, building, and chemical engineering degrees. After satisfying the academic requirements, they will then gain
materials experience through on-job training and practice and go through the
professional assessments in the usual way as required by HKIE route to become a
professional engineer.
Engineers from the industries of testing and
certification, construction materials, materials consulting, contractors and
etc are strongly recommended to participate the seminar/webinar.
