Workshop on Welding in Structural Engineering

Date, Time & Venue
5, 6 (half day), 8 & 9 November 2010 (Fri - Tue); to be advised

Programme Highlights
This workshop has been successfully run 18 times before. It is designed to enable engineers and others to exploit the undoubted opportunities through welding, whilst avoiding potential problems related to the use of welding. This workshop will cover topics such as welding processes and technology, the metallurgy aspects of welding, the effects of welding on common structural metals, the implications of welding for the engineer, the testing and assessment of welds, and the application of fracture mechanics in quality assurance procedures and defect assessment. Detailed notes entitled "welding in structural engineering" will be supplied to participants. The set of notes will form the basis of the workshop presentations and also provide considerable additional information on a number of topics not specifically covered in this workshop. This workshop will be of particular value to engineers, architects and builders involved with welding or welded structures, and to materials scientists, metallurgists and NDT personnel who may have little or no previous experience with welding. This workshop will also be of value to welding foreman, supervisors and inspectors who wish to improve their understanding of metallurgy, defect assessment and quality assurance. Attendance certificates (designed for 3.5 days CPD) will be issued to all participants who completed the workshop. However, participants are encouraged to take the examination to be held after the workshop to test his/her understanding of the workshop materials.
