Report

By Ir Sam Choy and Ir Corey Ho

A technical visit to the Alliance, K Wah and Hong Kong-China ready-mixed concrete production plants at Tuen Mun and Yuen Long was successfully held on 25 June 2011. The event was jointly organized by the CV Division, Concrete Producers’ Association of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Productivity Council and sponsored by the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) of the Hong Kong SAR. Over 45 participants attended the visit.

On arrival to the production plant at Tuen Mun, Ir Sam Yip, Mr Alan Wu and Mr Andy Kwok of the Concrete Producers’ Association first gave a presentation to introduce the concrete industry and challenges met in operating concrete batching plants in Hong Kong. The concrete industry currently supplies more than four millions m3 of concrete per year for construction use. The industry takes sustainability as its first priority for concrete production. Considerations are made to ensure the entire production process must be environmentally friendly, pollution be minimized with full compliance to Government standards, secondary cementitious materials including PFA and GGBS be adopted to reduce CO2 emission and durable high-performance concrete produced to extend the concrete lifetime.

After a further elaboration of the modernized production facilities in the batching plants, participants were first led to visit the Lam Tei plants which are operated by a joint venture consists of Alliance and K Wah Concrete Company Ltd. Equipped with two 4m3 twin-shaft mixers and seven cementitious materials storage silos, the state-of-art production plant operates fully automatically to ensure high productivity and consistent quality of concrete supplied to meet construction demand.

Participants then visited the Hong Kong-China concrete batching plant in Yuen Long. Being located in suburban area, the batching plant had faced the problem of constraints of work space and headroom. Great innovation was introduced to build the plant where all cementitious silos and batching facilities are neatly housed in a horizontal compound of no more than 13.5m high with separately-located aggregate bins. Yet, the concrete plant is productive and well integrated into the local environment with its production hardly making a nuisance to the surrounding community.

Participants were impressed by the effort the concrete industry contributed in innovation, assuring quality and sustainability. On behalf of the participants and organizing parties, Ir Sam Choy delivered a vote of thanks and presented souvenirs to Ir Sam Yip, Mr Alan Wu and Mr Andy Kwok as a token of thanks for arranging the visit.
