ReportTechnical
visit to Lithuania and Moscow (18-28 August 2018) - Ir Nora Shum
A team of 21 delegates from the Materials Division went to Lithuania and
Moscow for a series of technical visits. We arrived very late on Saturday night
and had a brief tour of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on Sunday. Our rich
technical visit menu started on Monday.
We spent a total of seven days in Lithuania visiting:
-two technical universities (Vilnius Gediminas Technical University
(VGTU) and its creativity and innovation centre – Linkmenu Fabrikas and Kaunas
University of Technology and Santaka Valley);
- dry concrete mix and cement manufacturers (SAKRET and Akmenes
Cementas);
- a composite column manufacturer (Peikko) and;
- landfill and incineration plants (KRATC and Fortum).
We went to Moscow for the last three days of our trip and visited the National
University of Science and Technology “MISIS”. Amongst all the places we visited,
Peikko, Akmenes
Cementas and MISIS were the most
impressive and attractive events for our group.
Peikko is the world’s leading composite beam (DELTABEAM®)
manufacturer in Lithuania. Precast hollow-core columns are constructed from steel sheets with rebar placed
inside. The composite columns would subsequently be filled with concrete at the
building sites after installation.
Akmenes
Cementas is one of the largest cement manufacturing companies
in the Baltic region. Lime and clay are mixed and milled by ball milling. After
milling, the mixture would be transported to a 66-meter tall kiln for drying.
The drying process is fuelled by burning waste tyres which reflects the
company’s environmental awareness.
The research laboratories of MISIS in Moscow are pioneers in 3D printing
techniques, and are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments. Their
masterpieces include drones, robotic arms and tailor-made seats for astronauts
in space capsules.
There has been a never-ending exchange of ideas between our group and
representatives from the hosts. We all agreed that the series of technical
visits were eye-opening and informative. The ten days of group tour and visit
also promoted good net-working between members.
