Technical Visit to recycle of rubber tyre workshop at Ecopark

By Ir LAM Chi-sing

A technical visit was organized to the recycle rubber tyre at Eco-park on 11 August 2018. This was jointly organized by the Environmental Division, Materials Division of the HKIE, Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals and Environment Management Association of Hong Kong.

Upon arrival, the Executive Director, Mr. Kenny Kwan of On Fat Lung delivered his innovative idea on the recycle of rubber tyre. He presented a number of researches about the waste of rubbish tyre and the amount of rubber tyre-type vehicle running in Hong Kong. There were about 680,000 vehicle in Hong Kong at the end of 2013 and a trend of increase number of vehicle about 30,000 tonnes in the coming years. He has conducted the research with developing innovative idea for recycle of rubber tyres. The tyre was grinded into power and use as proportional mix for pavement block manufacturing which can be used in footpath or non-structural materials, manufacture rubber sole plate for foot-wear repair, rubbish cushion in the playground, and asphaltic road surface.

The said recycle products have been manufacturing under the pilot scheme with quite successful, He stressed that the product of his innovative idea for recycle rubber tyre do pass regulation requirement.

He cited that basic tyre ingredients contained of synthetic rubber, natural rubber, carbon black and mild steel cord belt, polyester and nylon, steel bead wire and other chemicals of wax oil, nail and pigment.

Mr. Kwan also led us visiting their workshop. It was family owned business established in 1979 and had moved the workshop into Tuen Mun Eco-park few years ago. In the workshop, rubbish tyre waste was being cut into pieces and grinded, the pure steel wiring from rubber tyres was packed and stored into nylon bag for package before delivery to potential recycler. , then the rubbish is used for recycling manufacturing usable products. We also led to see the mixed pavement block yard.

The visit ended with question-and-answer session.
