Speaker: Representative from Golik
Company
Programme Highlights
Golik was established in 1977 and rapidly emerged as one of the Hong
Kong’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of mesh reinforcement. In 2019, Golik’s Tai Po plant and Tsing Yi
plant are accepted by Civil Engineering and Development Department as approved
steel reinforcing bar prefabrication yards. Golik Tai Po plant is the only
approved steel reinforcing bar prefabrication yard that supplied prefabricated
reinforcement cages by automated machine.
Today the stakeholders of Hong Kong construction industry are aware
of the advantage of off-site steel bar cut-and-bend. In addition to its most
advance automated “Cut-and-Bend” production line in Hong Kong nowadays, Golik
has upgraded the production capability of the automatic cage-making machine to
produce “double-cage” (i.e. bored pile cage with two layers of steel bars) for
bored piles in Hong Kong.
Throughout the visit, the participants can understand the update
technology on the use of automation equipment to form steel reinforcement bars operations,
quality control and their operation management system and environmental
protection and waste reduction.
Registration & Enquiries
The visit is charged HK$50 per participant for transportation and
will not be refunded. The maximum of participants is 20. Registration is
required. The applicants please fill the online registration form. The
successful applicants will be confirmed on or before 27 August 2021. CPD certificate will be issued after the visit.

visit to Golik Steel Reinforcing Bar Prefabrication Yard

A technical visit to Golik steel
prefabrication yard at Tai Po was conducted on 4 September 2021. This was
co-organized with the Environmental Division. The speaker Mr. PK Lau presented
the process of prefabrication of steel reinforcing bars used for construction.
The area of the yard is 24,000 square metres with an annual rebar production
of up to 100,000 tons.
The steel reinforcing bars shall
comply with the Construction Standards (CS2:2012) as specified by the Buildings
Department. The steel bars shall be tested before and after delivery to their
storage yards and must comply with the requirements on yield and tensile
strength and bending performance. A video of the prefabricating process was
shown during the visit to enable visitors to better understand the process of
cutting, welding and bending of bars.
The company has faced the
challenges of high construction costs and shortage of labors. They have taken
an innovation by establishing highly automated plants for the production of
prefabricated steel components to tackle the challenges and to meet the changes
in construction environment.
The advantages of using prefabrication
method for cutting and bending can provide a safer indoor working environment, better
dimension accuracy and overall quality control with reduction in waste and
double handling. The production process is controlled by computer which is
fast, systematic, and mistakes and risks free with no constraint caused by adverse
weather. BIM application is also introduced for preparation and crash analysis.
After the talk, we were led to
visit the workshop. It was noted that very few workers were in the workplace as
the majority of the prefabrication was carried out by machines automatically. A
large diameter steel mould was set up in the yard to show how reinforcing cages
for bore-piles was prefabricated efficiently in very safe condition, and later
a demonstration for fixing steel stirrups was also demonstrated.
The visit ended with a question-and-answer
session. On behalf of the Materials Division, Environmental Division and
participants, we thanked Golik’s management team namely Mr. Ricky Chui, Mr. Lam
Tin Kar, Mr. Pat Yau, Mr. PK Lau for arranging the visit.
