Programme Highlights
The Water Supplies Department has
given praises to stainless steel pipe materials for being of high pressure
capability, good corrosion resistance, high strength and durability, and ease
of jointing. Apart from these, tis space age materials is now cheaper which
provides a golden opportunity to expand its usage in re-plumbing works in a
revolutionary way. The seminar will highlight on iron, stainless steels and
pipe jointing methods, re-plumbing requirements including client’s expected quality;
abatement of nuisance on residents during refurbishment, rules and regulations
to follow; safety precautions; work programme details, implementation of
temporary water supply with no water supply suspension; fire prevention and
noisr control; external wall operation to work from height; water sample test
after installation and disposing dismantled materials.
A. Introducing
iron, stainless steels and pipe jointing methods
B. Client’s
expected quality
C. Rules
and regulations to follow
D. Safety
precautions

Report Webinar on the roles of stainless steel pipes in re-plumbing
worksBy
Ir LAM Chi Sing
A webinar on the above mentioned topic was organized on 28 Feb 2022
at the HKIE Headquarters. Two speakers-Dr Eric Cheng and Mr. Wong Tak Shing
were invited to share their experience. The first speaker introduced that the Water
Supplies Department (WSD) (June 2020) has remarked the use of stainless steel
pipe in the plumbing works. The stainless steel pipe has excellent corrosion
resistance with combining a number of chemical composition with inclusion of
iron, chromium, nickel, carbon, manganese and silicon for grade 304, molybdenum
for grade 316, and Nitrogen element for grade duplex steel 1.Stainless steel is
a high quality and strong material with corrosion resistance. It is suitably
applied in the plumbing work, potable water, wastewater treatment, desalination
and brine treatment. The University research study shows that stainless steel
316L has inhibitory effects on SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 Virus. The stainless steel
has high strength with high melting point and can resist to pitting corrosion.
It can be recycled with practicably no loss in strength. The use of stainless
steel pipe can save water used to flushing copper pipes and fittings in newly
constructed buildings. Referring to the WSD Circulate letter No5/2017, online
re-plumbing works of stainless steel pipe is recommended for use of
refurbishment and replacement of aging pipe work.
The second speaker delivered that the WSD has introduced Australia
Standard AS3688 to make a joint connection method to stainless steel pipe. It
included screw BS6362, expanded collar, rolled –grooved and push or press-fit
method of AS3688 standard. The connection portion has a protruded point fitted
with a rubber olive (croxed fittings). The water pipes connection can be
designed with prefabricates in the manufacturer’s workshop and delivered to
site for assembly and installation. This method can shorten the replacement and
installation time, minimize disturbance of interrupted water pipe, it is also
cost saving with high quality installation. It is better suitable for old
building replacement plumbing system.
The webinar ended with question-and-answer session.
